With more than 140,000 students, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina is one of the largest public school districts in the region and has long been recognized as a leader in instructional innovation. They’ve taken a content first approach to integrating digital technology in their classrooms and have done so across Math, Science, and Social Studies with real, quantifiable, improvement including (but not limited to) increased test scores in grades 5 and 8 science.

For a closer look at how this massive school district has used digital content to help teachers engage and inspire students, Discovery Education producers paid a visit to Rama Road Elementary School in Charlotte, NC for some one-on-one time with a handful of educators, curriculum directors and administrative leaders.

The story was one worth sharing.

“Techbook definitely empowers me as a teacher to want to become better for my students,” said grade 3 teacher Kristin Seegars, after finishing up an interactive lesson on the human skeletal system that had small groups of students working together on iPads, using Science Techbook and a miniature scale model of a human skeleton.

John Nabors, a K-12 social studies curriculum specialist, praises the Techbook’s adaptability. “Being able to be adaptable is a very important focus; that students are exposed to new content as it comes up. Discovery Education Techbook has been a game changer, it completely revitalizes the way that teachers previously taught.”

As for results, Nancy Addison, director of pre k-12 STEM Education, directly attributes their increases in grade 5 and 8 science test scores to the implementation of Science Techbook.
